Fickle: inconsistent, changeable, unpredictable, indecisive. A crowd has the potential to make a positive or negative impact on those all around us. Jim, Dave, Richard talked about dangers that can sneak into our lives: Temptation, fear, false leaders & teachers. All of the various voices can either inspire us to reach out to others & do great things for the kingdom or cause us to do unimaginable acts of destruction against the kingdom of God. The 1st option is choice!
Instead of following the crowd, we as the Airville Ministerium have intentionally chosen to come together during the Lenten season for a meal, fellowship with each other but more important to worship God. We’ve chosen to come together to help others who are in need. Instead of following the crowd, we have chosen to follow Christ!
The problem with a crowd is that it can very easily change from doing something good into doing something destructive. I remember seeing a Penn State football game where the crowd was involved in shouting when things are going well but then quickly turned to booing, looting & destruction. 2nd OPTION: Don’t rely on the feelings of the crowd – changes but instead focus on God’s Word – never changes! Crowds are fickle – unpredictable – can very easily turn against you.
The crowd in Jerusalem came to praise Jesus on Sunday as He rode into Jerusalem but on Friday they yelled to have Him crucified! They were easily aroused by the Pharisees – would you yelled for Barabbas or Jesus? On Sunday they worshipped Him, but on Friday they didn’t wanted to crucify Him. 3rd OPTION: without a strong faith foundation, one can be easily persuaded – like the man on a boat that the waves are constantly tossing him back & forth” [Jas. 1:6]. How fickle are we? Can we be easily be persuaded to change our mind? Is our faith deeply rooted on the Word of God that when unexpected events happen, we will still remain faithful? Some personal observations:
It’s easy go along with the crowd but it can also very quickly turn on you. Instead keep your eyes on Christ & your ears attentive to His Word by spending quality time in prayer, daily reading and also with other believers.
To hear God’s voice, we need to turn down the volume of the world. Resist the noise of the crowd by sitting quietly and listen to God as He speaks to you. “Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong” [Ex. 23:2].
Finally, run away from the influence of troublemakers. Don’t associate with them instead lean on your pastor/teacher/mature believers – they’re voice of reason & wisdom & will never lead you in the wrong direction.
Instead of being a fickle follower,
Commit your life in walking closer to Him!
